Scandinavian Culture Day To Feature Swedish Cinnamon Bun Day
The next Scandinavian Culture Day, scheduled for Oct. 4 at Jamestown Community College’s Hamilton Collegiate Center, will feature coffee and Swedish cinnamon buns.
The day kicks off the new year of Scandinavian Culture Day. Coffee and lingonberry drinks will be ready by 9:30 a.m. Either sit and enjoy coffee and a “goodie” or attend workshops beginning at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Ecklof Bakery on Foote Avenue, the local Swedish bakery, will be making the buns and is also. the second location to obtain kanelbullar.
The first Culture Day was in 1998, so this is the beginning of year 28, minus the COVID break. Culture Day is sponsored by the Scandinavian Studies Program made up of all the Swedish organizations in the community.
New this year is Scandinavian bingo, a hit at the 2025 Scandinavian Folk Festival. The Chautauqua County Weavers Guild will be leading workshops on different tabletop weaving techniques. If interested, borrow a loom and take it home for a month to continue the project. One can also begin a woodcarving or huck weaving project. The Swedish cooking workshop will be making warm blueberry soup. Obtain training in Norwegian painting, chip carving, knitting, make a decorated picture frame in the craft workshop or continue some Swedish genealogical research. Dancers from the Thule Swedish Folk Dance Team will be present to teach child and adult dancing to live folk music.
The Swedish School for Children is another highlight. Led by Susanna Ecklof, born and raised in Sweden, the school begins also at 10 a.m. Swedish folk dancing for children is at 10 a.m. followed by activities focused on Swedish culture.
Culture Day is free and open to the public with no registration requirements. Donations are welcome. It will continue to be held each month on the first Saturday until May 2026 with a special Christmas Market Day celebration at the December session.
