Deer St. Home Heavily Damaged In Morning Fire

DUNKIRK — A fire early Sunday heavily damaged a Deer Street home and displaced four residents in the city.

At 3:43 a.m., the Dunkirk Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a house fire in the area of Deer Street and East Fifth Street. Upon arrival, crews found fire engulfing the rear of the apartment house at 502 Deer St.

Firefighters made an aggressive attack using multiple hose lines and tools to bring the fire under control.The house suffered significant fire and smoke damage.

The exterior of the house at 500 Deer St. also suffered heat damage. Officers of the Dunkirk Police Department assisted the fire department by alerting and evacuating occupants, used their drone to find difficult to reach pockets of fire as well as moving hoses and ladders and other equipment.

Assistance was received from the Fredonia Fire Department, East Dunkirk Fire Department, Sheridan Fire Department, Chautauqua County Emergency Services, Chautauqua County EMS, Alstar EMS, City Code Enforcement, National Grid and National Fuel.

Crews were on scene for approximately 3 1/2 hours. There were no injuries. The four occupants of the house are being assisted by the Red Cross.

City and Chautauqua County Fire Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire.
