Exhibition Poultry Awards Given At Fair

Anthony Valvo (left) was named Grand Champion Poultry Showman and Elizabeth Weaver (right) was named Reserve Champion Poultry Showman at the Chautauqua County Fair.

The Chautauqua County 4-H Exhibition Poultry Project held its annual show at the Chautauqua County Fair, consisting of 15 youth members aged 5-16 exhibiting 39 chickens, two ducks, one guinea fowl, and two turkeys.

In showmanship, the youth demonstrated their bird to APA Judge Richard Hare of Springville, answering questions including parts of the bird, specific characteristics of the breed, poultry husbandry and poultry trivia. There were six cloverbud showman between the ages of 5-8 years old: Kamden Barron of Jamestown, Colton Thompson of Fredonia, Jack Tarnowski of Dewittville, Brayden Tarnowski of Dewittville, Maverick Gernatt of Jamestown, and Clara Valvo of Kennedy.

In the Novice, or first-year showman division, Lola Ribaudo, 12, of Falconer took top honors as Champion and Landon Hamilton, 9, of Jamestown earned the Reserve spot.

In the Junior division, experienced showmen aged 9-13, Anthony Valvo, 9, of Kennedy was named Champion while Harrison LeBarron, 10, of Silver Creek placed in the Reserve spot.

The Senior division, ages 14-18, was won by Elizabeth Weaver, 15, of Dewittville, with Everett LeBarron,16, of Silver Creek taking Reserve Senior Champion.

Overall, Anthony Valvo was named the Grand Champion Showman, having the highest score of the day. Elizabeth Weaver achieved the second highest score, securing Reserve Champion Showman honors.

In the breed show, Onna Warner’s Black Silkie Bantam won Best in Show. Reserve Best in show went to Elizabeth Weaver’s Old English Game Bantam.

Clean Leg Bantam: Anthony Valvo – Sebright

Colton Thompson, Lola Ribaudo, and Everett LeBarron each won their respective categories in the annual poster contest. Top Herdsman honors this year were earned by Lola Ribaudo, Harrison LeBarron, and Everett LeBarron.
