Scandinavian Festival To Feature Cultural Immersion Opportunities

A theme of this year’s Scandinavian Folk Festival is cultural immersion, an opportunity to observe and be exposed to folk arts.

Those attending can practice the skill and take home a kit to continue a project. One does not master these arts with one session, so there will be monthly instruction continued at Culture Day sessions. There is no charge for any of these sessions or sample projects.

The focus will be on six folk art skills.

Weaving – The collaborating Chautauqua County Weavers Guild will focus on table top weaving. A variety of tabletop looms will be available including the ability to sign out a loom to continue practice.

Rosemaling – Learn this Norwegian decorative painting skill.

Wood Carving – Join our woodcarving club. Blocks of wood and carving knives will be available.

Knitting – Be immersed in either beginner or advanced knitting skills. Do you have a project started that needs some attention?

Huck Weaving – Scandinavian flag kits will be available to begin practicing this skill.

Chip Carving – Create your own design on a block of wood and chip it out. Wood and tools provided.

Sessions are not restricted to adults since age-appropriate projects are also available for children. The above workshops will occur on Saturday, July 19, from noon to 6 p.m. and on Sunday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Scandinavian Folk Festival in the Northwest Arena in Jamestown. Culture Day is free and will occur the first Saturday of every month from October to May at Jamestown Community College.
