Fenton History Center To Host Civil War’s End

General U. S. Grant, pictured, was the Union General who defeated General Robert E. Lee. He also served as the 18th President from 1869-1877.

The Fenton History Center will host a free event Sunday, July 13, to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.

Sunday’s commemoration will be held from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. on the lawn of Civil War Governor Reuben E. Fenton’s mansion at 67 Washington St., Jamestown.

Civil War reenactors will be camped out in the park surrounding the mansion from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We welcome anyone to come visit the re-enactors to learn about life at that time, especially as a Civil War soldier. One of the re-enactors is a surgeon with all his tools of the trade,” said Joni Blackman, Fenton History Center executive director, “I hope some of our visitors will come in their period dress too.”

One of the highlights of the event will be a brass band playing period music.

“Rick Lundquist, a Fenton Board of Trustee member, is organizing a small brass band to play authentic period music, and we will have a speaker tell what happened in Jamestown on July 4, 1865,” Blackman said. “It was a huge day in Jamestown with fireworks, parades, skits, and lots of food.”

Refreshments will be served during the event. While the City Parks Department will be supplying benches, those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs.

Starting at $3.50/week.
