MAYVILLE – A historical program, “General Lafayette’s Visit to Chautauqua County in 1825,” will be presented Thursday, July 17, at 7 p.m. in the Chautauqua town meeting room, 2 Academy St, Mayville, at the Chautauqua Town Historical Society’s monthly meeting.

The presenter, Maxwell Walters, is curator of the Darwin R. Barker Museum in Fredonia.

Lafayette was the final surviving general of the Revolutionary War, and in 1825 he was one of the most famous people in both America and Europe. His visit to the then-tiny frontier settlements in Chautauqua County was an event retold by eyewitnesses for the rest of their lives.

Walters researched this topic in depth for the Barker Museum’s special exhibit, “Night Scene at Fredonia in June 1825: Hosting The Marquis de Lafayette.”

The program will be free and open to the public.

Starting at $3.50/week.
