Observatory To Host Presentation Wednesday

Gary Nelson

FREWSBURG – The Martz-Kohl Observatory will present “The Language of Binoculars” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18.

Gary Nelson, an optical expert and former observatory president, will make the presentation. He’ll break down all those terms like magnification, objective size, and field of view, so those attending can understand and optimize their binoculars.

Nelson has more than 40 years in optics. He’s an expert in eyeglasses and has crafted telescope mirrors, repaired all sorts of optical instruments and learned mirror grinding from the observatory’s namesake, Marshal Martz. He’s dedicated decades to helping people see the cosmos clearer and has even been the president of the observatory’s non-profit for more than 20 years.

Those attending are welcome to bring their own binoculars or spotting scopes. Nelson will offer personalized tips and practical demonstrations to help those attending get sharper views. He’ll also guide attendees how to choose the right binoculars for their needs.

The discussion will take place at the observatory and be available via Zoom. There will be a question-and-answer after the presentation and, weather permitting, tours and a look through the observatory’s telescopes.

Starting at $3.50/week.
