Millions of Americans across the nation this Saturday will put out non-perishable goods at their mailbox Saturday as part of Stamp Out Hunger — the annual food drive from United Way and the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Held each year on the second Saturday in May, Stamp Out Hunger is the largest single-day food drive in the country. United Way has partnered with the NALC to promote and support the event since 1994.

Donations remain local and will help Chautauqua County residents in need. In Chautauqua County, 48% of households have been struggling to get by. Of that number, 18% of households are living in poverty and 30% are ALICE households. ALICE is a United Way acronym which stands for “Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.”

ALICE households are nearly one in every two in Chautauqua County. It’s the increasing population of individuals and families who work, but are unable to meet their basic needs.

According to organizers of the event, food collected in Chautauqua County will be delivered directly to the local food pantries in the community. Items collected closer to Buffalo will go to food banks there as well as FeedMore WNY.

To participate, leave donations of non-perishable food in a bag near the mailbox on Saturday. Mail carriers will pick the donations up when delivering mail.

Starting at $3.50/week.
