LAKEWOOD – Members of the Women’s Club of Lakewood recently met for their April meeting. President Wynona Imfeld is stepping down after presiding for two terms. She thanked the board and members for their continued support over the last four years. Her goals as president included establishing the group’s private Facebook page, as well as creating a public Facebook page.
Club donations helped fund the new Hartley Park playground. Imfeld researched and chaired the celebration of the club’s 75th anniversary. A booth was entered into Lakewood’s first Fall Festival offering a children’s area with games using fine and gross motor skills. The club continues donating food, clothing and hygiene products to area food kitchens and pantries along with the Southwestern Central School’s health centers. Knit hats, mittens, scarves and gloves were donated to the “Warming Line” during the winter months at the Hazeltine Library.
Membership dues and money raised from monthly raffle tickets helps the group continue presenting scholarships to Southwestern Central School seniors, as well as the many other various community groups the club donates to yearly.
The club is sponsoring a community book drive. A book event will be announced and held this summer at Hartley Park. The Good Neighbor Bookstore, Lakewood Memorial and Hazeltine libraries are collecting books for the book drive. Anyone wishing to donate used or new books for elementary and middle school children may drop books in the donation box at The Good Neighbor Book Store in Lakewood, or call the club’s community service chair, Heather Thauer at 716-398-0618. Books will be collected through June 10.
There have been 70 new members of the club in recent months.
The guest speaker for April’s program was Jamestown Seneca artist Kaycee Colburn. A recent resident artist at Jamestown Community College, Colburn is a published author and podcast host. Colburn’s work is deeply rooted in her cultural heritage.
