A local support group originally established to assist family members caring for loved ones experiencing psychosis has now broadened its scope to support all individuals providing care to someone living with a mental illness.

Under the guidance of the Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene, founded in 2022 by Lisa Greeley, retired licensed master social worker, the Circle of Support group offers a space for caregivers and supporters to share their experiences, exchange ideas and support one another.

Since its inception, Circle of Support has grown into a resource for anyone supporting a loved one through mental health struggles. The group is now facilitated by Liz Leighton, a clinic care coordinator in the county Mental Hygiene Department who brings her own perspective and experience as a caregiver familiar with navigating the mental health care systems in Chautauqua County.

“We’ve seen how impactful it can be for people to connect with others in similar situations,” Leighton said. “The group is a safe space where members can express their concerns, share their frustrations, and celebrate progress in their caregiving journeys.”

With an emphasis on community building, the Circle of Support hosts regular meetings where caregivers can share their stories, learn from each other, and receive guidance. Additionally, local mental health providers are regularly invited to join the group, providing expertise and answering questions in a friendly and supportive setting.

The group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Jamestown City Hall, fifth floor. Meetings are open to anyone in the community who is providing support to someone with a mental illness.

“We’re committed to ensuring that everyone in our community who is supporting someone with a mental health challenge feels seen, supported, and empowered,” said Tamie Coleman, clinic director. “Caregiving can be an isolating experience, but no one has to go through it alone.”
