Observatory Speaker To Discuss Eclipse, Auroral Display

Dr. James Spann

FREWSBURG – The Martz-Kohl Observatory will continue its lecture series at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21 with Dr. James Spann, a senior scientist for space weather at NOAA’s NESDIS Office of Space Weather Observations.

This year has brought a total solar eclipse in April and an auroral display in May. Spann will explore the connection between these two phenomena, why people should understand and study them, and how they impact society.

Spann is a renowned space weather scientist with extensive experience at both NASA and NOAA. With a background in physics and a career dedicated to studying space phenomena, he has made significant contributions to the field. His research focuses on understanding the impacts of space weather on Earth and developing tools to monitor and predict these events. Spann’s passion for his work is driven by a deep curiosity about the natural world and a desire to apply his knowledge to benefit society.

Spann’s lecture will be shown on the big screen at the Martz-Kohl Observatory and available online via Zoom. Those interested can visit the observatory to join in a lively question and answer period after the discussion. If the weather permits, there will be public viewing opportunities.
