Mayville Senior Citizens To Meet Aug. 15

MAYVILLE – Thirty-five members of the Mayville Senior Citizens and four guests gathered recently for a hot dog picnic luncheon at the VFW in Mayville.

After the invocation by Dianne Goodrich, the group sang happy birthday to those with July birthdays: Kathleen Rock, Linda Anderson, Peg Skillman and Donna Hensley. Since it was Anderson’s birthday, Sharon Frudd baked the cake.

After five short stories, Dianne Goodrich, devotional chairperson, led the group in the Lord’s Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Jeff Wagner, president, called the meeting to order.

Fred Himes made a motion to accept the secretary’s report as given; seconded by Bonnie Johnson; carried. No correspondence. The treasurer, Kathie Sukalac, gave the treasurer’s report. Linda Anderson made the motion to accept the report; seconded by Joyce Ayers; carried.

Wagner reminded the group there would be no meeting on Sept. 5. There will be sloppy joes at the Aug. 15 meeting; those attending the Sept. 21 chicken barbecue need to sign up and pay.

Becky Dalziel, tour director, said 33 people were going on the Buffalo River Cruise.

Bill Tornstrom, program director, said the guest speaker at the Aug. 15 meeting will be Elizabeth Hall, an attorney who will discuss real estate, will and trust drafting, estate planning, etc. and the timely fashion things needed to be done.

The kitchen committee was Joyce Ayers, Bonnie Johnson and Dolly Gilbert.

The meeting’s guests – Nancy, Dan and Anne Dimicco – were welcomed. Dana Corwin, incoming director of the Office for the Aging, spoke to the group regarding the Eligibility for the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program being offered through an allotment by the state. If income falls within the guidelines, seniors can get coupons worth $25 for fresh produce from a farmers’ market. The market needs to be certified. If the farmer is certified by the state, one can use the coupons with that farmer. Presently, the Jamestown and Lakewood Farmers’ Market are the only two markets registered in the state.

Door prizes were won by Dan Dimicco, Darlene Harper, David Thorp, Rita Himes, and Bonnie Johnson. The lottery was won by Lois Malloy with a bonus of $4 donated by Wagner.

The meeting was then turned over to John Cross, who performed jazz on the saxophone. He played many familiar tunes and promoted financial literacy along the way.
