Master Gardeners To Present Programs Aug. 21

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Master Gardener Program presents two programs on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 6 p.m. at its demonstration gardens next to the Jamestown Community College tennis courts.

Topics are “Saving Your Own Garden Seed: It’s Easier Than You Think” and “Extend Your Growing Season: How to Make and Use a Portable Cold Frame.”

Saving a garden seed can help develop a favorite crop that is well-adapted to a garden and growing environment. It can also be the beginning of a family heirloom. Master Gardeners will teach the basics of seed saving, when and how to harvest crops for seeds, how to prepare wet seeds like tomatoes and dry seeds like bush beans. Those attending will also learn about isolation distances to prevent cross-pollination and proper storage to maintain seed viability. Dinah Hovey, Lifelong gardener and Master Gardener volunteer, will be the host for the presentation.

Cold frames allow gardeners to extend their growing season. Harvest vegetables early in the spring growing season as well as after frost and cold weather arrive. Cold frames are also a way to use succession planting and produce more food for a family. Laura Marsala, a lifelong gardener and Master Gardener volunteer, will lead the session.

Evenings in the Garden are held the third Wednesday of every month from June to September from 6 to 8 p.m. at the College Community Gardens on the campus of Jamestown Community College, Curtis Street (near the tennis courts).

Starting at $2.99/week.
