Hospice To Hold Memorial Service, Butterfly Release

LAKEWOOD – Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care will host its annual memorial service and butterfly release Saturday, June 1, at 1 p.m.

The heartfelt event provides a space to honor and remember loved ones, both virtually and in-person, at the Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care Lakewood office.

The service features a reflection on the transformative journey of grief, symbolized by the butterfly release ceremony. Butterflies represent hope, new beginnings, and cherished memories.

“In many cultures, butterflies symbolize the remarkable transformation between worlds,” explains Jamie Probst, director of bereavement services at CHPC. “As butterflies emerge from their chrysalis, they signify both an end and a beginning–a profound representation of the journey of grief. It is through this journey that we discover new ways to cherish and preserve the bonds we shared.”

CHPC extends an open invitation to the community to join this special occasion. Community members can purchase butterflies for $10 each in memory of loved ones. More than one loved one may be remembered per butterfly, and memorials may be submitted without purchase. Orders and memorials must be submitted by Tuesday at chpc.care/butterfly.

“As butterflies take flight, so too do our cherished memories. The CHPC Butterfly Release and Remembrance allows us to celebrate the lives of those we’ve served while offering comfort and connection to their loved ones,” said Mike Testa, CEO of CHPC.

Pick up butterflies on Saturday, June 1, between 10 a.m. and noon at the Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care office at 20 W Fairmount Ave, Lakewood, or 3780 Eagle St, Fredonia. Those outside the area can purchase butterflies online for staff release during the online service.

The event will be a hybrid format, with a small gathering at the Lakewood office and a live stream.
