Woman Who Entered Water To Elude Police Rescued

Petit larceny and resisting arrest charges were announced for a Jamestown woman who walked into the Chadakoin River to elude police only to be quickly swept away.

Huntyr M. Swanson, 23, on Wednesday was transported to UPMC Chautauqua for an evaluation following her frigid dip in the water.

According to the Jamestown Police Department, Swanson was located behind Big Lots around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday after officers were alerted moments earlier to a shoplifting complaint.

Police say the 23-year-old entered the river and, “due to the strong current, was swept away.”

After she began yelling for help, officers entered the water in a rescue attempt but were unable to reach the city woman.

With help from the Jamestown Fire Department, a rope was thrown to Swanson who had already been swept to an area near the bridge on Institute Street.

“The female was able to grab a hold of the rope and was pulled out,” Jamestown police said in a news release.

Swanson was evaluated for possible hypothermia and later released from the hospital. She is now scheduled to appear in Jamestown City Court later to answer the charges.

Starting at $3.50/week.
