U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson of Pennsylvania has thrown his support behind two measures that stand to impact his rural district.
The first is entitled the "Defense of Property Act."
"Recently, U.S., federal and state governments have imposed onerous laws and regulations that have infringed on the freedoms of Americans to exercise their property rights," he said in his weekly newsletter. "This bill would establish more uniform and efficient Federal processes for protecting a property owner's rights as guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment.
"The bill would also ensure that even significant impairment of the value of a property owner's land can be sufficiently compensated."
According to Congress.gov, the text of the bill is not yet available.
The prime sponsor is Rep. Nick Langworthy of New York, and Thompson is one of 12 co-sponsors, all Republicans.
A second bill Thompson has co-sponsored aims at addressing a Medicare reimbursement percentage rate set to be cut effective Jan. 1.
"Last Congress, I along with my colleagues led efforts to mitigate Medicare cuts to health care providers under the Physician Fee Schedule," Thompson said. "There are continued concerns these fee cuts will drive up the cost of health care in our region, forcing many doctors to close their doors."
"This cannot happen as many of our rural providers will be the hardest hit."
According to a statement from the bill's prime sponsor, Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC), a Nov. rule by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services would cut Medicare reimbursement services by 3.4 percent.
"As health care providers continue to struggle with inflation and workforce shortages, these cuts would be devastating for rural and underserved communities," Thompson said. "We must work to preserve access to health care providers across our district."
The bill received bipartisan support among its cosponsors, according to Congress.gov. It was referred to two separate House committees earlier this month.
