Chautauqua Lake Names Students Of The Month

Students of the Month at Chautauqua Lake Central School, honored for November achievements, are Cecilia Shevantya, Charles Curtis, Lily Otto, Karagan Fairbank, Valerie Mueller, and Jonathan Barnes.
Shevantya, a senior, is an exchange student from Indonesia, who is staying with Mary Talbot of Chautauqua Institution while she is in the United States. She is the daughter of Listio Indromarsudi and Ivonne Deasy of Indonesia. She is enjoying her architecture and math classes the most this year. While attending Chautauqua Lake, Cecilia has become involved in Yearbook Club, National Honor Society, Envirothon, Ski club, High School Academic Bowl, and the bowling team. While in Indonesia, she participated in science clubs, student council, a number of musical committees and groups, and many community organizations. She also won many awards and participated in a variety of academic competitions. Outside of school Cecilia enjoys reading books, watching movies and orchestral concerts, creating art, and volunteering in community organizations. Cecilia admires her parents because "they have encouraged and guided me at all times throughout my life, not just on the path of my exchange experience. They shaped me as a tough person to explore lots of things." Cecilia's future plans include completing high school studies in Indonesia and then pursing an engineering degree in college.
Curtis, a junior, is the son of Nathan Curtis of Ashville. Charlie enjoys classes that involve history; this year he is really enjoying his AP United States History class. He has participated on the school Envirothon team for the past two years. Last year, the team made it to the State competition and placed well. Outside of school, Charlie likes to hunt, bird watch, listen to audiobooks and play games online with his friends. When asked what historical person he admires, Charlie said Abraham Lincoln because "he was able to lead a nation through a very trying time in American history. He was also just a generally interesting person to learn about." His future plans include attending college to become a high school history teacher.
Otto, a sophomore, is the daughter of Jill and Steve Otto of Ripley. She is enjoying her geometry and art classes the most this year. Lily has competed on the CLCS varsity track and field team since eighth grade. She has been on the high honor roll every marking period and has been designated Student of the Month every year since seventh grade. Outside of school, Lily enjoys participating in track and field and hanging out with her friends. Future plans for Lily include graduating high school, attending college, and "moving somewhere fun."
Fairbank, a freshman, is the daughter of Chris and Korrin Fairbank of Ashville. Her favorite classes this year are English and math. An avid athlete, Karagan has competed on the varsity volleyball team that won States this year. She also competes on the varsity softball team, the modified basketball team, and the flag football team. Outside of school, Karagan competes on travel volleyball and softball teams. She would love the opportunity to be her mother for a day so that "I can see what her life is like while we are not home and see what she goes through." For her future, Karagan would like to attend college and become a nurse.
Mueller, an eighth grader, is the daughter of Gwen Mueller of Dunkirk. She enjoys science and math classes the most this year. She has competed on the CLCS bowling team since seventh grade and has participated in the school ski club since sixth grade. Outside of school, Valerie enjoys skiing. If she could be another person for a day, Valerie would choose Gloria Steinem because "she has dedicated her life to social activism." Her future plans include becoming an aerospace engineer.
Barnes, a seventh grader who is called J.J., is the son of Mary Miller of Dewittville and Jonathan Barnes of Mayville. This year, he is enjoying his math and art classes the most. He is competing on the bowling team this year. Outside of school, he enjoys creating art and playing games. In history, he admires George Washington because "he was famous and fought in wars." In real life, he admires his grandma because "she was kind and loved doing crafts." JJ's future plans include becoming a math teacher.
