Hunter Braley, a 10th grade student at Falconer Central School, entered the campus for the 2023 school year as a veteran of Camp Kennedy Space Center thanks to funding assistance from the Lucile M. Wright Air Museum Scholarship Fund.

The 2022 recipient, with an interest in “anything related to space,” is very fond of Space Camp, having participated multiple times in recent years.

“It’s pretty close to a real astronaut training experience,” noted Braley, who attended the five-day event at Camp Kennedy Space Center, in Merritt Island, Fla. “We spoke with an astronaut who made several space shuttle missions, and we participated in several simulations.”

Braley has always loved learning about something new, and often does so through online demonstration videos on technology and science topics. In addition to space exploration, coding, and computer science, several of Braley’s favorite activities can be found in his school’s stem lab, wood shop and computer lab.

While at Camp, Braley was grouped with other students of the same age for teamwork exercises and interactive experiences using virtual reality and equipment to demonstrate a Mars landing, microgravity setting, and a rocket launch. He found the overall variety of experiences to be most rewarding and enjoyed the chance to hear from experts in the field of science.

“We have this unique opportunity available through the generosity of the current and past members of the Lucile M. Wright Air Museum Board of Directors, who established this scholarship,” shared Tory Irgang, Executive Director. “Those who attend always have a wonderful time and it can directly impact future career pursuits.”

Area students in grades four through twelve and adults of all ages are eligible to apply for the 2024 scholarship, for which applications open in October. To qualify, students must have a B average in math and science, possess an understanding of the solar system, and have a general interest in space travel, aeronautics, or science.
