Driver Praised For Actions In Bus Accident
Quick action by a Silver Creek bus driver is being praised after an accident on Route 20 before noon Friday.
According to scanner reports, a car struck the bus at a location east of the town of Sheridan at 2459 Route 20. Sheridan Fire Department, Chautauqua County EMS, Silver Creek Fire Department, Chautauqua County EMS and law enforcement were responded to the incident, which occurred at 11:40 a.m. Friday.
Silver Creek school reported the incident involved the driver and 11 students. The district, on its Facebook page, said a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction crossed over the median.
“Our driver reacted immediately by swerving to avoid a head-on collision with the vehicle,” the district said. “Despite the driver’s best efforts, the vehicle collided with the bus. The bus driver and all students have been medically evaluated and we are thankful to report that there are no injuries. Parents and guardians of the students have been contacted and the students have returned to school.
“The district is grateful for our driver’s quick reflexes and response to the situation, which likely avoided serious injuries to himself, our students, and the other driver.”
