Judy Wroda of the Southwestern Independent Living Center in Jamestown recently received the Certified Aging in Place Specialist designation from the National Association of Home Builders.
According to NAHB, "a Certified Aging in Place Specialist works closely with remodelers and health professionals, such as occupational therapists and primary care physicians, who understand the challenges of aging and unique abilities/disabilities and can provide safe, attractive and accessible modifications to your home."
"Aging in place" means a person can remain in their home as they age by having the appropriate modifications completed that are suited to a person's unique abilities/disabilities. as well as addressing anticipated issues when aging, such as possibly needing access to roll-in showers, lower cabinets, more accessible doorways, better lighting, "smart" home technology, roll out cupboards/pantries, ramps, and other modifications that will make staying in your home as you age a more realistic option.
Wroda will help area residents by visiting with them, their family, and others that are involved in their care/life, and finding solutions to mobility issues in and around the home, assisting in designing rooms that are accessible and friendly to the person as well as their guests, and advise in other matters that relate to the home environment so that the person is able to make their home a place that is not only safe for them to live in, but also attractive and functional.
Wroda works with persons who live with a disability, persons who have an acquired disability such as veterans and persons who have sustained injuries in motor vehicle accidents, elders, those who anticipate issues when aging due to genetics and the possibility of some type of impairment later in life, as well as others in Chautauqua County.
