Arkwright Receives No Bids For Addition
OBSERVER Photo by Braden Carmen Arkwright Town Supervisor Brian McAvoy spoke at a recent Town Board meeting about the town’s struggles to get bids on a new Highway Building addition.
ARKWRIGHT — The town has hit another speed bump on the road to new infrastructure in the town. No bidders came forward with an offer to take on the town’s proposed Highway Department building addition.
“This is not great news,” town Supervisor Brian McAvoy said.
The town previously had to scrap plans for a new Town Hall building after bids came in well over $1 million over what the Town Board expected.
McAvoy said at the time of the Town Hall building plans being scrapped, “The bid opening for our building project was atrocious. I don’t know what other word to use.
It was beyond what anybody thought it should be.”
The Town Board hoped at that time that making improvements to the current Town Hall and an addition to the Highway Building would satisfy the town’s needs.
When the new plans were accepted and put out to bid, McAvoy said, “My opinion is, sometimes you can’t hit a home run. Sometimes you hit a single.”
Now, trying to avoid striking out entirely, the Town Board hopes to meet with local contractors who were anticipated to bid to discuss why they were not interested in the project. The response the Town Board receives will influence its next steps.
“We’re not giving up on this,” McAvoy said. “We’re going to re-bid one more time. … We’re certainly not throwing in the towel.”
