It’s the end of the day on a Friday at Washington Middle School and the excitement is palpable: it’s time for students to redeem their “Lobo Loot!”
A Tier 1 intervention, “Lobo Loot” is distributed to students by any teacher or staff member for being respectful, responsible, and/or safe. After accumulating these tickets, they can then be used for fun rewards held monthly on Fridays — including redeeming them for a snack from the mobile school store.
For students in Danielle Ellis’ and Sara Joly’s classes, there is also joy in being the ones to stock and sell items from the store.
“(Joly) and I volunteered because we thought it would be a great way to teach customer service skills to our students,” Ellis said. “We have students take inventory of what items we have, they stock before and after the sale, and then they take the cart to the classrooms we have scheduled for the day. Students are then responsible for counting tickets and distributing the goodies to the classes. Our students love doing it and being part of it!”
The Washington PBIS team also has found creative ways to keep students engaged with reward days for gold and silver pass winners.

The program rewards Washington students who are attending school regularly and following school rules and expectations.
Rewards have included a special field trip to go ice skating at the Northwest Arena in downtown Jamestown, a hot chocolate bar around the holidays, as well as an exhibition basketball game between the building’s teachers and the Jamestown Jackals. The Jackals even returned to have lunch with students who received “Silver Passes.”
“We’ve tried to find creative ways to help keep students engaged and motivated to do the right thing,” said Joly. “We’re grateful to those community partners who have stepped up to help us achieve that goal.”
The PBIS team aims to provide students with a variety of items on which they can spend their “Lobo Loot” including snacks, games, books, and other fun rewards. Those interested in donating items to the PBIS team can reach out to Ellis or Joly at danielle.t.ellis@jpsny.org or at sara.e.joly@jpsny.org.
