The Women’s Club of Lakewood held its most recent meeting at the YWCA Lake Lodge with special guests Indo Quinones, Mission Impact Director and Alize Scott, Social Justice and Race Equity director of YWCA Jamestown.
They led a discussion focused on eliminating racism and empowering women and how the group can become active participants in their vision of social justice in our community.
Scott and Quinones highlighted some of the many programs the YWCA offers the community and surrounding areas in regard to their mission of communicating cross-culturally. The BookMARK program was developed for school aged children to encourage them to learn about diversity, kindness, appreciation of each other and creating safe and supportive space for everyone. They do this by visiting local schools and reading and discussing age appropriate books to the classes and pairing it with a fun learning based activity. They also have a local podcast series, Broadscast, where they discuss all things social justice and women’s issues. The program can be heard on 107.9 FM WRFA on Fridays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 11 a.m. or on either WRFA’s or YWCA’s website to listen at any time.
The Women’s Club of Lakewood is an active group of women of all ages who reside within the 14750 area. The group actively donates to local organizations and groups to support the community as well as award Southwestern High School graduates with scholarships every year. The club also enjoys a variety of interest groups, programs, and community service.
The next meeting will be on March 28 from 6-8 p.m. at the Marvin Community House with special guest Barbara Winner, owner of Barbara’s Specialty Teas.
