First Lutheran To Hold Saturday Christmas Eve Services
First Lutheran Church, 120 Chandler St., Jamestown, will have two Christmas worship services Saturday with a contemporary service at 4 p.m. and a traditional service at 9 p.m. preceded by a 30-minute vocal and instrumental musical prelude beginning at 8:30 p.m.
The Rev. Mark E. Swanson, Pastor, will preside at both worship services with a Christmas meditation.
The 4 p.m. contemporary service will include the children’s Sunday School Pageant as part of the service along with members of the Sacred Fire Praise Team led by Kimberly King, leading the service. Gathering Songs will by “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” and “For Us a Child Is Born” “Open the Eyes of My Heart.” Special music will be “Christmas Offering” by P. Baloche. The communion song is “Jesus Light of the World.” The service will include a Christmas message by Swanson, Holy Communion and the singing of “Silent Night” with candle lighting at the Lighting of the Candles. The service will be video recorded and available online via the Sacred Fire First Lutheran Jamestown Facebook page; First Lutheran Church Jamestown Facebook page; and on the church website at www.flcjny.org.
The 8:30 p.m. Instrumental/Vocal Prelude will include an organ solo “Nowell Joyeux” by Gordon Young played by Brian A. Bogey, organists; a piano solo entitled “Alfred Burt Carol Medley” arranged by Mark Hayes and performed by Gail Espinoza, pianist; Laura Carlson, flautist will play “What Child Is This” arranged by Karen Smith and David Snyder and accompanied by Gail Espinoza; Marika Kock, soprano soloist, will sing “The Mystic Star” by Bernard Hamblen; a piano/organ duet entitled “O Come All Ye Faithful” with “Sheep May Safely Graze” by J.S. Bach and arranged by Linda McKechnie will be performed by Julie Livengood, pianist, and Brian Bogey, organist; the Good News Hand Bell Ensemble directed by Karen Linn will play “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” arranged by Cathy Moklebust; and Julie Costantini will conclude the prelude by singing “O Holy Night” by Adolphe Adam.
The 9 p.m. Festival Worship Service with Holy Communion will feature congregational hymns and carols accompanied by organ and trumpeter, Glenn Utter. The congregational songs will include “Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful,” “Angels We Have Heard On High,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” ‘It Came Upon the Midnight Clear,” “Once in Royal David’s City” also the singing of “Silent Night” during the traditional candle lighting ceremony. The closing hymn will be “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” followed by the organ postlude “Christmas Gloria” by Kenneth Walton.
Choral anthems sung by the First Lutheran Choir will include “Hosianna” (Hosanna to the Son of David), by Vogler, sung in Swedish. The choir will also sing “Calypso Lullaby” arranged by Joel Raney; “Wonder, Wonder” arranged by David Kozinski; and “Gloria, Gloria!” arranged by Mary Caldwell. The Traditional Service will also be recorded on the First Lutheran Church Jamestown Facebook page and the church website www.flcjny.org.
