Swedish Christmas Market Set For Saturday

Julmarknad, the Swedish Christmas Market Day, will be held on Saturday in Jamestown Community College’s Hamilton Collegiate Center.

This is when the Swedish community opens its doors to a full day of food samples, giveaways, music, folk dancing, workshops and other events to prepare for Christmas. It is sponsored by the Scandinavian Studies Program.

The Handicraft and Swedish Imported Gifts Market Place will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring the creations of local artisans who offer a wide variety of Scandinavian gifts, including items imported from Sweden and second-hand Swedish treasures.

From noon to 1 p.m., the Swedish Julbord, featuring Julskinka (Swedish ham), Dopp I Gryta, rice pudding, Janssons Temptation, Swedish pickled beets, Korv, pickled herring and more for a donation of $5. Coffee and lingonberry juice will be available throughout the day. There will be traditional ring dancing with music by Svenska Spelman, and a visit by Swedish Lucia and her court.

Local Swedish vendors, such as Country Woods Country Store and Antiques with coffee and cookies, Ecklof Bakery and Peterson Farm with a Swedish food truck will be open throughout the day, as well as two local museums, the Fenton History Center and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History.
