New System Allows For Convenience, Increased Meal Info For Parents And Students

JPS Food and Nutrition Services introduced MealViewer earlier this school year, a convenient online menu service that allows parents to view their student’s daily menus online or on the MealViewer app and streamlines the daily checkout process in the cafeteria.

Jamestown Public Schools is bringing the cafeteria menu to the convenience of a mobile device.

JPS Food and Nutrition Services introduced MealViewer earlier this school year, a convenient online menu service that allows parents to view their student’s daily menus online or on the MealViewer app.

“This service allows us to meet our families where they are and provide all the information parents need when considering their meal options at Jamestown Public Schools,” said Jeff Smith, director of food services.

The app allows parents to view allergen information, view nutritional information, and set up profiles for them and their students.

“Each student has a six-digit lunch number they enter in once they’ve received their breakfast or lunch for the day,” Smith said. “Once that number is entered, the student’s photo and information shows up on the screen for our cashiers to double check. This system will even issue an on-screen alert if a student has an allergy of some sort so that our staff can make sure they haven’t accidentally grabbed a food item that they can’t have.”

The accessibility of nutritional information has also been important for students who are diabetic, or have food allergies Smith said.

“Because each school meal and menu has the nutritional information of each meal item, our school nurses are able to more easily monitor that students aren’t accidentally eating something they shouldn’t,” he said.

The app allows school menus to be visible on screens in each school building, as well. And once a profile is set up, students can “favorite” meals that they like so that they can receive a notification the next time that meal is being offered at school.

“We want to make sure that we’re meeting the needs of our students,” Smith said. “This increased technology in our cafeterias allows us to do that and offer our families a more convenient solution.”

To register your child on MealView, visit jpsny.org/mealviewer or download the mobile app on your smartphone and register your free account. Parents or students can set up their student profile by first selecting their school and begin selecting allergen information and favorite meals.
