FREWSBURG — Robert H. Jackson Elementary School kindergartners recently took a community walking tour.

After a year of discussing citizenship, neighborhoods, communities, professions, and other social studies concepts that are immersed in the school’s reading program, teacher Jill Smith said the tour is a good end-of-the-year wrap-up event.

“We are so lucky to have such a wonderful community here in Frewsburg,” Smith said. “The kindergarteners got to visit the post office, the Myers Memorial Library, the town hall, Tops and The Dinner Bell restaurant. Each of these places gave up their time from 9:30 in the morning until noon to meet with all four of our classes.”

After the tours, kindergarten classes were able to go to the Firemen’s Grounds and use their pavilion for our picnic. The Frewsburg Fire Department made that ready for the group and opened up the bathroom. The class ordered pizza from the Frewsburger Restaurant and bought ice cream at The Corner Scoop.

Normally the group walks to town and back, but it was very rainy on that day. The school’s Transportation Department helped out at the last minute by providing a bus to bring the class to town and shuttle groups between some locations.

Those who helped include Rachel Roushey and Izabel Nowak at the Myers Memorial Library, Ricki Benson and Laura Swanson, who were working at the Frewsburg Post Office; Tops had several employees on hand that day, but Store Manager Chad Frasier gave the group tour; Russ Payne, Carroll town supervisor, and Sue Rowley, town clerk, spoke with each of the classes at the town hall; Judge Bob Gray let each of the students call the group to order and swore them in; Carroll Police Officer Caruso talked with the students and showed them the police car before he had to answer the call for a fire; Nina Constantino and two of her employees met the class at The Dinner Bell, where the children checked out the kitchen and took turns practicing flipping pancakes before sampling one of the Dinner Bell’s huge pancakes. The students were given gifts from their locations as well as the time for the tour.
