The Roger Tory Peterson Institute will host a series of outdoor bird walks for beginning birders from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesdays continuing April 20.

Spring migration is underway and the dawn chorus is beginning in the area. Many bird species are busy proclaiming that spring has sprung, which means that it is time for weekly bird walks at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. Each one-hour Wednesday bird walk is designed for beginning birders and led by Craig Thompson, former vice chair of the Audubon Council of New York State.

“These outdoor forays will show participants how to identify common local birds by sight and sound using the acclaimed Peterson system,” Thompson said. “Each program will feature a timely theme, beginning with ‘The First Sounds of Spring’.”

All of the bird walks at RTPI are open to the public and free of charge. Registration is required by 5 p.m. the day before each bird walk and spaces are limited. To register, or for more information, visit RTPI’s website (rtpi.org/programs/weekly-bird-walks/) or call 716-665-2473. Participants are urged to dress for a short hike along the sanctuary’s gentle trails. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Bird guides or binoculars are not required but will be helpful. In case of inclement weather, the program will be cancelled.

Starting at $3.50/week.
