Mayville Senior Citizens To Meet Oct. 21
Forty members of the Mayville Senior Citizens met at the VFW in Mayville on Sept. 18 for a barbecue chicken dinner prepared by members of VFW.
The monthly collection of the club was donated to the cooks of VFW for preparing the dinner.
President Janet Loomis called the meeting to order and announced there were masks to wear available on the table so please wear them when we walk around visiting people or getting our food.
Devotions Chair, Dianne Goodrich, led us in the pledge of allegiance after several good stories.
Secretary’s report was read by Darlene Barney. There was no correspondence. A correction was made to the dialing “l” statement. The statement now reads that one does not need to dial “l” in front of the area code in which one lives. All ten digits of the phone number must be dialed, however. If dialing outside one’s area code, the “l” must be added as well.
Treasurers Report was given by Kathie Sukalac. She stated that last month’s speaker, James Kurtz, wanted his speaker’s stipend to go to the Vet’s Memorial and noted that if the club contributed an additional $25, the club could purchase a sponsor’s brick in the gazabo. President Loomis took a vote over the phone and through emails among the board members and it was unanimously approved. The $75 purchase of the brick was part of the expense report
President Loomis reported that she and Darlene went to the Senior Council meeting in Jamestown on September 9th. Six senior groups from the county were represented. Former United Senior Council officers, Russ Dietrich, Ellen Cofaro and Becky Blum, were conducting this meeting to ascertain if there was enough interest to start the Council again. We all agreed to try for the next 3 months to have meetings. . Jeff Wagner from Mayville volunteered to be our representative should this happen. The OFA representative pointed out that with open enrollment for insurance coming up, the office has hired more people specifically to handle insurance calls. These people are to impartially present the facts and not recommend a specific insurance. The next meeting on October 14th at 10:00 a.m. at The Chautauqua Center in Jamestown, NY. The speaker will be discussing insurance options available this fall. Janet and Dalene plan on attending.
Goodwill Chairperson Mary Carlson stated she did not send out any cards this month.
There is still no volunteers for the tour director(s). Jeff stated he is willing to help anyone who wants to go on any of the D & F trips. That is, if D & F contacts him. He was happy to help someone last month
Program Chairman, Bill Tornstrom reported Gail Pearles and Bernie Dotterweich from Cattaraugus, New York will be our guest singers in October. They have been together for many years and will be preforming a mixture of bluegrass and upbeat folk music for our entertainment.
The kitchen committee, Louise Richer and Joyce Ayers, were thanked for serving the food and cleaning up afterwards.
Ann Carlson was welcomed as a new member to the group.
There is to be a Board meeting after the general meeting. All are welcomed to come and express their concerns and/or suggestions.
Because there is an increase in the Covid 19 variant, the group was asked for input on how our future meetings should be handled. One lady spoke and stated that she felt we should continue to meet. If anyone becomes ill or is exposed, then a decision could be made at that time. Should that happened it is hoped, that the affected person would be responsible and inform his/her table members and let the President know so that appropriate action could be taken. The group agreed.
Door prizes were won based on the dinner ticket numbers. Lucky winners were Patricia Cook, Patti Szczepankicwicz, and Paul Motrynczuk, The lottery ticket of $5.00 was won by Ernestine Cruzado.
The next meeting will be at VFW on Oct. 21 with pizza and tossed salad for $3.
