Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care has received a gift toward the Our House campaign to build the first hospice residence in Chautauqua County from the local chapter of Catholic Daughters of Americas, which made a $1,500 contribution on June 29.

Members, officers and many supportive volunteers of the Court St Gertrude 92 of Catholic Daughters of the Americas recently sponsored a chicken barbecue to support this new hospice care facility. The barbeque was held June 13 at Celoron Park and was catered by Weidner’s BBQ of Eden.

The Star Hospice House will be located adjacent to the Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care administrative offices on Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood. It is expected to be operational later this year.

“This addition to our community has been so badly needed for such a very long time,” said Carmella Ciancio, Regent for Court St Gertrude 92. “We are hopeful that other local organizations will also be inspired to help Hospice bring this invaluable project to fruition.”

The residence is named in honor of the generosity of Stanley and Elizabeth Star, long-time residents of Chautauqua County. It will provide more than 200 individuals who lack a caregiver, have complex medical conditions or can’t remain at home with a peaceful, dignified resting place in their final days.

“We are grateful to the Catholic Daughters of Americas for their support of The Star Hospice House,” said Shauna Anderson, president and CEO of Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care. “Their gift came to us through a lot of hard work and volunteerism. Their support is inspirational to us and we will honor their gift as we work to make the Star Hospice House a reality.”

The Our House Campaign has raised more than $2.6 million. Due to pandemic-related cost increases associated with the construction, the campaign is being extended through the summer.

The campaign is being guided by Bert and Mary Rappole, campaign co-chairs, who have a long and deep commitment to Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care’s mission.

Catholic Daughters of the Americas is the largest Catholic women’s organization in the United States and its local Court St Gertrude 92 has been in existence in Jamestown since 1908.

The court’s mission focuses on nourishing spiritual growth, as well as fundraising efforts that help support a multitude of charitable agencies and works.

The mission of Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care is to provide comprehensive palliative/end-of-life care and education. Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care provides hospice care for patients and families facing life-limiting terminal illness, palliative care for those with serious chronic illness, and bereavement support to individuals, families and organizations who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
