The Jamestown Board of Education honored retiring board member Dan Johnson at Tuesday’s meeting.

Johnson has served on the Board of Education since 2012. The Board of Education presented Mr. Johnson with a small gift as a token of its thanks for his many years of service.

“We are very sorry to see Mr. Johnson retire from the Board of Education,” said Paul Abbott, JPS Board of Education president. “We will miss his valuable input, his willingness to devote time and energy to school board business, and his knowledge of the community and district. There is no recognition we can give that will properly thank him for his many hours of dedication and volunteer service to Jamestown Public Schools but we wanted him to know, his efforts have been very much appreciated.”

As a board member, Johnson focused on the academic needs of Jamestown children and helping to provide students with the best possible educational opportunities, while being cognizant of local taxpayers. Johnson served on numerous committees while on the board including: finance/audit, capital projects, grievance, evaluation, legislative and policy.

“Taking on the public service role of school board member is a challenging and often thankless responsibility,” said Dr. Kevin Whitaker, district superintendent. “I am grateful to Mr. Johnson for his years of service to the children of our community.”

Johnson and both of his children are Jamestown High School alumni. He spent 34 years in law enforcement, with 22 years in the Jamestown Police Department, retiring in 2010. He is currently the senior investigator with the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office.
