JCC Students Participate In SUNY Model EU

Two Jamestown Community College students participated in the annual State University of New York Model European Union Simulation held earlier this April.

Participating in the simulation as key governmental entities for Sweden were Bagul Mammedova, prime minister, and Andrew Johnson, foreign minister. Mammedova and Johnson negotiated with juniors, seniors, and graduate students from around the world, drafting a Gender Equality Proposal as well as a proposal recognizing the state of Palestine in the Middle East.

Mammedova, a global studies major, is a native of Turkmenistan in Central Asia. She holds office within JCC’s Student Senate, where she is a student liaison to the college’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force.

Johnson, a native of Jamestown, is a liberal arts major. In addition to his involvement in SUNYMEU, he serves as a city government intern with political science professor Greg Rabb. After this semester, he plans to transfer to SUNY Albany.

“JCC continues to be the only community college to participate in the SUNY Model European Union and has done so since 1988,” said Rabb, the program’s faculty advisor. “We can be proud of the work of our students, Bagul and Andrew, who did extraordinarily good work negotiating with juniors, seniors, and graduate students from across the world.”

SUNYMEU is the first and oldest EU simulation in the country and is funded by the Institute of European Union Studies at SUNY, through the Office of Global Affairs, SUNY System Administration, campus contributions, and participant conference fees.
