Two films nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards will show at Reg Lenna Center for The Arts.
Nomadland screens Wednesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. Judas and the Black Messiah screens Friday, April 16, at 7 p.m. Each is nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
In Nomadland, Best Actress nominee Frances McDormand stars as Fern. Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, she packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloe Zhao, the film features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern's mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West. Nomadland is rated R and is 110 minutes long. In addition to Best Picture and Best Actress, it is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.
In Judas and the Black Messiah, FBI informant William O'Neal (Best Supporting Actor nominee Lakeith Stanfield) infiltrates the Illinois Black Panther Party and is tasked with keeping tabs on their charismatic leader, Chairman Fred Hampton (Best Supporting Actor nominee Daniel Kaluuya.) A career thief, O'Neal revels in the danger of manipulating both his comrades and his handler, Special Agent Roy Mitchell. Hampton's political prowess grows just as he's falling in love with fellow revolutionary Deborah Johnson. Judas and the Black Messiah is rated R and is 126 minutes long. In addition to Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor, it is nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Original Song.
Reg Lenna Center for The Arts will screen the remaining Best Picture nominees throughout April, including: Minari on April 21 at 7 p.m., Promising Young Woman on April 23 at 7 p.m., The Father on April 28 at 7 p.m. and Sound of Metal on April 30 at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the movies are $7 per patron. Each patron will also be charged a $1 fee for additional cleaning of the theater due to COVID-19.
Seating is limited due to social distancing mandates. Masks are required of all patrons. All tickets must be purchased ahead of time.
Additionally, temperature checks, contactless concession sales and social distancing markers will be in place at the theater. All patrons will be shown to socially distanced seats by ushers. All surfaces in the theater will be cleaned between movie showings. New, compliant air filters have been installed in the theater.
