Frewsburg Native Presented $2,000 Scholarship

Midshipman 3/C Shannon Estus of Frewsburg was presented with a $2,000 scholarship by the Portland, Maine, Marine Society at Maine Maritime Academy’s Spring Regimental Awards ceremony held virtually recently in recognition of her academic (3.95 GPA) and leadership qualities as demonstrated during the 2020-21 academic year.

Estus is studying to receive a bachelor of science degree in Marine Transportation Operations with a U.S. Coast Guard Unlimited 3rd Mate License, alongside a minor in Marine Engineering Operations.

The Portland Marine Society is the world’s third-oldest active marine society whose 1796 charter was signed by Samuel Adams as governor of Massachusetts before Maine became an independent state. In presenting four such awards at the ceremony, Capt. David Sulin, chairman of the PMS Scholarship Committee, said the society’s membership is very pleased to be able to fulfill its original mission of “promotion of the knowledge of navigation and seamanship” through financial aid to deserving students.
