Area Senior Accepted Into National Association For Music Educators All-Eastern Symphonic Band

Matthew Sigler

Southwestern High School senior Matthew Sigler was recently accepted as a first French horn player into the National Association for Music Educators’ All-Eastern Symphonic Band.

Selected from 1,150 All-State applicants, Matthew was ranked by the state president to fill the ensemble and is one of 719 of the finest high school musicians from Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont selected for this honor. He will participate in a “Virtual Weekend” from March 4-6, 2021, that will include masterclasses with professional musicians, rehearsals with conductors as well as opportunities to learn and network with colleges and universities and participate in mock auditions.

The non-traditional experience will be different from the in-person rehearsals and concert that have, in the past, coincided with the NAfME Eastern Division biennial conference. This year, students will individually record their performance from home led by a virtual performance by their conductor. The recordings will be edited into a virtual ensemble for the concert performance. The concert will premiere Friday, April 23 at 8:30 p.m. at the 57th NafME Eastern Division Virtual In-Service Conference.

Sigler will be led under the baton of conductor Dr. Cynthia Johnston Turner from the University of Georgia.

A member of the Southwestern Class of 2021, Matthew is the son of Rob and Jamie Sigler and the brother of 10-year-old twins Sarah and Gracie Sigler. He plans to attend college and major in biology.
