A special ceremony was held last month to celebrate the graduates of the UPMC Chautauqua Medical Laboratory Science Program. Graduates received a certificate of completion allowing them to complete their Bachelor of Science degree at their respective universities.

With a 40-year history, the UPMC Chautauqua Medical Laboratory Science Program is an accredited, 45-week, preceptorship offering intensive study and clinical experience in medical laboratory science as the final year of a bachelor’s degree in medical technology. The rigorous year is designed to develop a highly competent laboratory professional ready to perform vital diagnostic tests.

“Completing our preceptorship is a significant accomplishment for these graduates and now it is time for their certification and licensing exams,” said Michele Harms, program director. “These graduates have not only learned how to use special techniques and instrumentation in the diagnosis of disease, they have an in-depth knowledge base to support clinicians and to problem solve difficult cases. I have the honor of watching them transform from college science students to amazing laboratory professionals able to join a vital career and am very proud of each of them for a job well done.”

This year’s graduates are: Anthony Agnello (SUNY Fredonia), Gabrielle Rivera (Indiana University of PA), Sarah Suarez (Canisius College), Justin Sweitzer (Messiah University), and Blaire Wickwire-Van Arnam (SUNY Fredonia).

“It is an honor and privilege to be a part of this unique and amazing program, imparting knowledge of this profession to such distinguished individuals,” said Kyle Jordan, program coordinator. “I encourage each of our graduates to build upon the foundational knowledge they have obtained over this past year to not only find a career, but also to excel in it and be an asset to wherever their journey takes them.”
