‘Pay It No Mind’ To Be Screened Sunday

Marsha P. Johnson was an activist and a figure in the Stonewall Uprising of 1969.
Stonewall served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. The P in Johnson’s name stands for “pay it no mind,” her response when people would ask about her gender.
At 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, the Welcoming Congregation Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Jamestown is screening “Pay It No Mind – The Life and Times of Marsha P. Johnson” followed by discussion.
The feature-length documentary focuses on this revolutionary black trans-activist: an ACT UP marshal, Andy Warhol model, drag queen, sex worker, starving actress and known within the New York LGBT community as “Saint Marsha,” the patron protector of the street youth of Christopher Street.
In her own words, Johnson speaks about being one of the first drag queens to go to the Stonewall and tells harrowing stories of being on the streets of New York as a boy in drag. She speaks to a commitment to marching for rights for all gay people and is remembered by those interviewed as a deeply spiritual and generous person who attended every type of church.
The film and discussion will last 1.5 hours. It is free and all are welcome.
The UUCJ is located at 1255 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown, with parking in the rear. For more information, visit jamestownuu.org and or facebook.com/jamestownuu.
