County DA To Discuss Officer-Involved Shooting

FREDONIA — Chautauqua County District Attorney Patrick Swanson has called for a press conference Friday at 2 p.m. in Fredonia. During the event, he said a statement will be made regarding the Dec. 10 officer involved shooting in the village of Fredonia.

On that date, the Fredonia Police Department responded to assist the Fredonia Fire Department with a call that they had at 76 Liberty St. Upon arrival of emergency services, George Penev, 23, of Erie County, was found to be locked in the bathroom with an unknown medical condition, and once confronted allegedly came at Officer Nathan Scriven, brandishing a knife.

Police said Scriven retreated from the house where Penev continued to follow, resulting in Scriven firing his weapon, hitting and killing Penev.

Police Chief Brad Meyers said previously that Scriven was wearing a body camera at the time of the incident and the footage of the event was utilized by both the New York State Attorney General’s Office as well as Swanson’s office.

Scriven returned to work in late January after Fredonia Police completed its investigation.
