Local Model Railroad Club To Host Annual Open House

The Independent Railroaders will hold their annual open house tour of model train layouts Saturday from 10-5 p.m.

The event will take place at seven locations across western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania. The layouts are the products of individuals who model railroads of various time periods and regions across the United States.

All of the participating layouts are in 1/87 (HO) scale. The event is self-guided. For more information, contact Tim Anderson at 487-0730.

¯ John Fiero’s layout is set in northwestern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland in 1949. The layout depicts the former Baltimore and Ohio railroad’s double track mainline from Connellsville, Pa. to Cumberland, Md. The layout’s main focus is coal operations south of Pittsburgh.

¯ Mike Dickinson’s layout is set in Jamestown and the surrounding region during the 1960s and 1970s. The railroad showcased is the former Erie-Lackawanna New York to Chicago mainline. Included are models of the EL passenger stations in Jamestown and Salamanca.

¯ Wayne Bankowski’s layout depicts lines in suburban Pittsburgh once owned by the former Consolidated Rail Corp. (Conrail). The era modelled is 1999-2000. Superbly detailed buildings and custom built automobiles and trucks can be seen.

¯ Tim Anderson’s layout depicts the former Chessie System of railroads in New York and Pennsylvania. The era modelled is the 1970s. Scenery is under construction.

¯ Roger Schulenberg’s French Creek and Niobe is an imaginary railroad set in 1949. The subject is a rural branch line from Niobe to the fictional Alberbottom, NY. This layout includes a model of the former Nickel Plate (New York, Chicago, and St. Louis) Railroad depot that was located in Dunkirk.

¯ Dick Bradley’s Pennsylvania and Maryland Railroad is set on the day of April. 19, 1955. It is based on the former Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad and the region it served. Fine structure modelling and countryside scenery can be seen on this layout.

¯ Ray Goetz’s Mojave Railroad is based on the operations of the former Southern Pacific in California. Features of this layout include two large freight yards, a branch line, and industrial scenery. The layout also runs trains from the Western Pacific, Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads.
