OLEAN — The two candidates vying for the Congressional seat in New York’s 23rd Congressional District — U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, and Dr. Tracy Mitrano, D-Penn Yan — will appear for a public debate at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Olean High School Auditorium, 410 W. Sullivan St., Olean.

The debate is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties and the Olean Times Herald.

“The purpose of the debate is to educate voters about issues in the campaign, provide an opportunity for voters to witness candidates discuss those issues face to face, and stimulate voter interest and participation in the election,” said Margie McIntosh, president of the League of Women Voters in Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties.

Jim Eckstrom, editor of the Olean Times Herald, will serve as moderator for the event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
