Seniors Host Luncheon At Gerry UMC

GERRY — Rick Rupprecht of the Audubon Community Nature Center of Jamestown was the recent speaker at the Gerry Senior Citizens luncheon held in the Gerry United Methodist Church.

Rupprecht said he has been with the Audubon for 20 years and wanted to present some information to all on the American Bald Eagle. He said the American Bald Eagle, which stands for American Liberty, has a wing span of five to eight feet and stands about 30 inches high. Nests are usually five feet in diameter and as deep as six feet. Breeding of the Eagle has been increasing about 10 percent annually. Using a variety of photographs of Liberty, the American Bald Eagle that is a resident at the center, he presented the information. The American Bald Eagle at the center was injured so that it will never be able to fly in the wild, and has become a resident of the center.

The Rodeo City Senior Citizens met for a luncheon first, with all providing a dish of food to add to the meal. Allen Swanson, president, welcomed all and Pastor Phil Shay gave the blessing prior to the meal. Table decorations were provided by Terry Canfield and Jean Kemp.

Margie McIntyre, secretary, read the minutes of the previous meeting. Barbara Swanson was nominated and elected to serve as the group’s treasurer, who recently retired. A special thanks was extended to Valerie Bartholomew who served as the treasurer for nearly 30 years.

Sunshine chairman Ruth Newton read the names of those celebrating a birthday and those who are celebrating an anniversary during the month of August. Member John Sipos told a humorous story about a cake being sold at a community bake sale. The gathering closed with all singing “Blest Be The Tie That Binds” written by Dr. John Fawcett in 1772, led by member Cecil Miller.

Starting at $3.50/week.
