Learning At The Lawson Series Continues Wednesday

BEMUS POINT — The Lawson Boating Heritage Museum in Bemus Point will continue its monthly “Learning at the Lawson” series Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Local author, Fletcher “Ned” Ward will present the history of the Chris-Craft Corporation. What started as a small boat building partnership between Henry and Christopher Columbus Smith in Algonac, Mich., grew into the world’s largest producer of classic mahogany boats.

Most boaters know and appreciate the Chris-Craft brand, but Ward began his research, few knew that many of the boats were built in Falconer. Ward’s presentation will acquaint attendees with the history, explain what caused the Smith family to locate here and why the firm’s tenure here was short-lived.

Ward’s book, The History of Chris-Craft Corporation’s Jamestown Division in Falconer, New York, 1943-1948, will be available for sale. The author donated the work as a fundraiser for the Lawson Center and publishing of the book was made possible through a grant from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. All book sale proceeds support the Lawson Center.

There will be complementary beverages and appetizers at 6:30 p.m. before the presentatipon. The presentation is free and the public is invited. The Lawson Center is located at 73 Lakeside Drive, Bemus Point. More information and directions can be found at www.thelawsoncenter.org.
