Two outstanding area high school seniors were honored as “Scholars of the Month” by the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville at its March 20 meeting, which was held at the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church in Westfield. The two seniors were Cameryn Hawkins of Chautauqua Lake Central School and Alexandria Kassman of Westfield Academy and Central School. Two other school districts’ March honorees, who were unable to attend due to the students’ busy schedules, will be recognized in April.

Janese Berkhouse, Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club President, welcomed the honorees, their families, respective school district superintendents and Rotarians to the meeting. Following dinner and some club business, Mary Swanson, Club President-Elect, introduced Hawkins, and Luci Petrella, Club Youth Exchange Chair, introduced Kassman. Swanson and Petrella announced highlights of each of the scholars’ accomplishments, and the scholars told what their future plans were. Each of the students received a framed certificate and hearty congratulations.

Cameryn Hawkins, a Chautauqua Lake CSD senior, is the daughter of Ryan and Julianne Hawkins of Ripley. She will be graduating in June with an Advanced Regents Diploma and is academically ranked in the top 10 of her class. Hawkins has achieved the Honor Roll throughout her high school career, and she is a member of the National Honor Society.

A very active student, Hawkins also belongs to the yearbook club and language club, and she served as class president during her eighth, ninth and 10th grade years. Academic awards she has received include The Clarkson Leadership Award, Wells College 21st Century Leadership Award, and the Jamestown Community College Connections Student of the Year Award.

Hawkins is also a very involved and talented athlete. She has participated in junior varsity and varsity volleyball since the 7th grade, played basketball in the 7th through 10th grades, and has played softball for six years. She has been captain of the JV volleyball team and the varsity softball team. Also, she participates in a travel volleyball team during the off-season.

Community activities are numerous for Hawkins. Some of these include volunteering at American Red Cross blood drives, Salvation Army bell ringer, helping at a food pantry, assisting with the spaghetti dinner at her church for confirmation, volunteering during the last two years at the President’s Day Ice Festival, and peer mentoring. She has also volunteered at wrestling tournaments and worked with younger children to teach them the game of volleyball.

After her high school graduation, Hawkins is planning to attend Jamestown Community College, where she will play volleyball, and then transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a medical related degree. She plans to have a career in the medical field.

Alexandria Kassman, a Westfield Academy & CSD senior, is the daughter of Kimberly and Jacob Stahley and David Kassman. She will graduate in June with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. During high school, Kassman enrolled in the Jamestown Community College courses of English 1510, 1530 and 1540, and Communications 1610, 1710 and 1720. Also, she was enrolled in Principles of Biology through the SUNY College at Buffalo. At the end of her senior year, she will have earned 27 college credits. In addition to college courses, Kassman enrolled in Advanced Placement Microeconomics and World History. Other courses She is taking include Regents physics, We the People, Functional Anatomy of the Limbs, and physical education.

Kassman is a member of the National Honor Society. She is a reliable and friendly student who embodies the core values of NHS, which are character, leadership, scholarship and service. Also, she was chosen by her teachers as Senior of the Month for February. Kassman has balanced her academic coursework with outstanding participation as a member of the varsity girls’ soccer team for which she served as captain during her senior year.

She is a member of several school organizations, including student government, Spanish club, and the prom committee. During her entire high school career, she was elected by her peers to the position of class treasurer.

Outside of school, Kassman has held employment at Portage Pie and the Brick Walk Cafe. In the fall of 2018, she will attend Jamestown Community College for two years and then transfer to University at Buffalo, where she will study dentistry. She plans to pursue a career in orthodontics.
