Jazz Concert Series Set For Friday

On Friday, the Jazz Concert Series at the Infinity Arts Cafe, 302 E. Third St., Jamestown, will feature An Evening with 4 Hip Gents at 7 p.m.

The concert is sponsored in part by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. There is no admission price. An offering will be accepted.

4 Hip Gents includes jazz series host, John Cross, on saxophones, Ian Liedke on piano, Les Sabina on bass and Ray Domanski on drums. The group will play a variety of popular jazz standards including music of Charlie Parker, George Shearing, Eric Dolphy, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and Horace Silver.

Liedke is a jazz pianist, composer and entrepreneur from Hamburg. He graduated in 2015 from the State University at Fredonia with a degree in music and a minor in jazz studies. He works for the Eden Central School district as its piano accompanist, hosts a stream on Twitch.tv, where he will request the audience to send him YouTube links of any song. Liedke will then play the song back to them by ear while adding his own twists on the song. He will even go into explaining the song structure and send sunscribers several versions of chords progressions that can be used with the song. He has performed with many artists such as Bruce Johnstone, Arturo Sandoval and Cory Henry.

Les Sabina has degrees from the University of Toronto, University of Miami and Michigan State. Sabina is a professor of music at St. Bonaventure University. The Performing Rights Organization of Canada named him jazz composer of the year in 1988. As a saxophone player Sabina has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Della Reese and The Temptations.

Percussionist Ray Domanski’s early bands included The Vandals, Welkin and later the soul band Hard Luck, with sax and piano player Chu Nero. In New York City, he studied with Peter Nero drummer Joe Cusatis and entered the jazz scene, eventually being lured back to Buffalo for a steady gig with The Professors under mentor Steve Willis. Here he was also in the pit band at the former Melody Fair, backing Brook Benton, Frankie Laine, The Drifters and The Shirelles. On the West Coast, he played with Buffalo saxophone legend Don Menza, Frank Rosolino, Conte Candoli, Pepper Adams, Joe Romano, Frank Strazzeri and John Heard.

Those attending should enter the former U.S. Post Office on the corner of Prendergast Avenue and Third Street. Guests needing handicapped access can contact Infinity ahead of time by calling 664-0991 to let them know they will need to be let in at the Second Street entrance.
