SHERMAN -- The LMNOP Gallery in Sherman will present five artists in its newest opening/reception today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The show is entitled: "Caution: Men Working Ahead." The artists featured are all male artists from Chicago, Buffalo and the Chautauqua County area. The term "caution" implies watchfulness or to make aware. The LMNOP Gallery is a member of the North Shore Arts Alliance, the Cattaraugus County Arts Council and Americans for the Arts. The gallery is a store-front type gallery with more than 1,400 square feet of wall art space and 1,200 square feet of gallery floor-space for reception and welcoming.
A featured artist is Matt Geer, who bring his work from Chicago, Ill. Geer is an underground Chicago artist, fighting in the art trenches for more than a decade, a self-described ''artopuss'' with tentacles coiled around every creative outlet. He works in many different mediums and styles, exploring each obsession to its end. Geer is known through-out the United States for his provocative art. Displays of his work are viewed and sold around the Chicago.
Also featured will be artist Bill Thomas of the Active Arts Alliance. Thomas is a mixed-media artist, screen painter, collector, organizer and occasional graphic designer from Chautauqua County. He creates his images by building up layer upon layer of acrylic paint, water color pigments, aerosol paint, house paint, printed images, cut and pasted paper images, waste product from previous art projects, other people's leftover art supplies, and all kinds of other found materials and recycled surfaces. He likes bright colors, geometric patterns, the law of repetition and densely balanced compositions. Artist Tony Mel will include his exploration works. Of his work, Mel said, "I love the power when things are layered, the ghost-like quality, the history, the depth and distortions of meaning. Like writing a poem of one word, one mark becomes more powerful as it builds on and interrelates with other marks." His work explores many languages in art media.
Aaron Pomerantz lives in Brocton. His art media is hanging mobiles. He collects materials for his work in their "as-found conditions". His installation will present pieces that have currents of ecology, death and rebirth and our relations to each other. Often, he uses music and air movement to enhance the inspiration and amusement of the work.
John Caisley is a member of the North Shore Arts Alliance. His paintings are in charcoals, oils, and clay. His subjects have a dream-like perspective, some as if viewing the scene through translucent glass. Other works invoke a surreal mirage, figures both blurred and lucid. Many of his paintings have been created from small moments deep in the background of photos, and then taken with something else in mind.
The opening of "Caution: Men Working Ahead" will offer a large scope of works available to any who appreciate a variety of art medias. The artists will be available during the show hours to speak about their work. Food and refreshments will be on hand as well.
The LMNOP Gallery is also in collaboration with the Chautauqua County Museums and Historical Society with an open house for the Sherman Yorker Museum also held on Saturday. In addition, the gallery is in association with Lynn's Emporium of Sherman with its specialized antiquities sale, and both will coincide during the same hours as the LMNOP reception.
