Plan Ahead For Travel

Being older does sometimes mean that you can’t travel as carefree as in you did in the past; you need to consider any physical limitations you might need to work around. Whether you are going out of town for an extended time or across town for the day, especially if you are dealing with a chronic health issue, it is necessary to plan ahead.

Tips for your Trip:

¯ Always wear a medical ID bracelet, emergency contact numbers and carry a complete list of your medical conditions and medications.

¯     Make sure you have enough medication to last all the way through your travel and a few days after you return home.

¯     If you need equipment and supplies for your illness make sure to bring them as well.

¯     Bring nutrient dense snacks and water to drink during your travel time. Try to stay on your normal eating style and schedule while away from home.

¯     Wear comfortable, loose clothing and shoes and socks that fit well.

¯     If it is a longer trip by car or airplane, be sure to get up/out to walk at least every hour. Move your legs and feet in place at your seat frequently and drink lots of water.

¯     If changing time zones take the time to think ahead about medication times.

¯     If traveling by plane, check the airline’s current rules for carry on and checked bags in regards to your medical needs and supplies plus get to the airport early.

¯     Remember unfortunately as an older individual you are more likely to get scammed or stolen from during your travel.

¯ Don’t advertise your travel plans especially on social media. If you are traveling alone have an itinerary that you have shared with someone and stay in touch if you change your plans, always carry a cell phone.

¯     If staying at a hotel, do not put your clean the room sign out as it advertises that you are not in the room; keep the security chain on the door while you are in the room. Don’t take expensive jewelry etc..
