2 min read

ERIE, Pa. – HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Erie will host several special events as part of National Patient Safety Awareness Week, scheduled for Sunday through Friday.

HealthSouth Erie will host safety activities for patients and employees throughout the week starting Monday including safety bingo, casino safety games and a patient/ therapist basketball game on Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. featuring the Erie BayHawks mascot, Clutch. There will be prizes and refreshments served throughout the week.

“Patient safety is a top priority and one of the most important aspects in creating a high-quality patient experience,” said John Papalia, HealthSouth Erie CEO. “We know patients have a choice and we work to enhance our culture of safety every day. This week-long event is an opportunity to recognize the importance of safety in our hospital while creating a fun environment.”

Ways to increase patient safety, according to the National Patient Safety Foundation, include:

Washing your hands is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick and prevent the spread of germs to others.

Keep a good history of personal and family medical history. Write down illnesses and conditions of family members in addition to treatments and medications that you have had and whether they helped or not. Remember to bring them with you to your doctors’ appointments.

Educate yourself on your medications. Can you identify your medicines when they are not in their containers? How should they be stored and what dosage should you take? What are the side effects?

Prevent falls by using nightlights in dark areas where you walk, wear skid-free shoes or slippers and clear pathways in the home of clutter.
