Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Agriculture Program announces educational webinars for local beef cattle producers, sponsored by the Chautauqua County Beef Producers Group.
The beef cattle industry is quickly evolving, and beef cattle growers need to keep pace with it. The program plans to explore that evolution with three fast-paced, forward-thinking sessions for the 2016 Ohio Beef Cattle School webinar series.
These educational webinars will be held locally at the Frank Bratt Agricultural Center, 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown, on the following dates and times: Jan. 19, Feb. 2 and Feb. 16. Each webinar will begin at 7 p.m.
Tuesday’s webinar will focus on outlook, marketing and risk management. Dr. Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University livestock marketing specialist, will kick off the program with his insight into the beef cattle market outlook. Sam Roberts of United Producers Inc. will offer suggestions on market risk management and capturing profitable pricing opportunities in the coming year.
The Tuesday, Feb. 2, session will address management priorities for profitable beef production. Members of the OSU Extension Beef Team will address calving windows, genetic choices, breeding management, crossbreeding and economic traits that will impact profit potential.
Tuesday, Feb. 16, will focus squarely on the end product. Dr. Lyda Garcia, assistant professor of meat sciences at Ohio State University, will demonstrate carcass fabrication into primal and sub-primal cuts and discuss how quality and yield differences establish beef values.
Lisa Kempisty, dairy/livestock educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County, encourages all interested beef cattle producers to attend any or all of these webinars. “Our local beef cattle producers, whether they are raising just a few cattle, 25 or even 100-plus cattle, can benefit from the information which will be presented by experts involved in the beef industry. New ideas will be offered on producing and marketing beef cattle that can be used on our area beef farms.”
As this program is sponsored by the Chautauqua County Beef Producers, there is no fee to attend. Registration is appreciated to accurately plan for materials and refreshments by contacting Lisa Kempisty, at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County, at 664-9502 ext. 203 or ljk4@cornell.edu, or Ted Card, president of the Chautauqua County Beef Producers, at 664-0356 or lvg1259@netsync.net, at least two days prior to each scheduled webinar.
