Lake Shore Paving along with asphalt supplier Jamestown Macadam Inc. and W.A. Wilson Inc. received a New York Materials Showcase award for the rehabilitation of a runway at the Chautauqua County-Jamestown Airport.

In May, Lake Shore began a $5.7 million project to upgrade the primary runway at the airport. The project was 100% paid for through a federal grant.

Lead by project manager Blake Carlson, the project consisted of the re-construction at the intersection of the primary runway and the crosswind runway, along with the removal of 5 inches of existing pavement on the remainder of the runway. The re-construction phase consisted of the removal of approximately 10,000 cubic yards of material, and the reinstallation of roughly 16,000 tons of limestone sub-base.

Once the re-construction phase was completed, milling of the remainder of the main runway took place, removing 5 inches of the existing asphalt over the 5,300 foot long runway. This equates to roughly 16,000 tons of milled asphalt.

“Not only are we thrilled to have local contractors provide services on our airport projects, the level of service, quality and overall project experience provided was exceptional,” said Shannon Barnhart, county airports manager.

Mark Lindstrom, president of Lake Shore Paving, thanked all of the employees and suppliers for a successful project.

“Working on an airport comes with a different set of standards that are unique to only airports,” he said. “The tolerances for workmanship are very tight and when they are not met come with very large consequences. We decided to take on this challenging project knowing that we had employees and suppliers that could meet these tough challenges. Our employees rose to the challenge, working as long as 14-hour days during the paving operations. Our dedicated work force chose to put forth the effort needed to exceed the specifications, and for that I congratulate them.”

Lake Shore Paving started in 1998 by Steven Lindstrom as a small company with 12 employees. Their original work was limited to residential and commercial paving. Today, they have grown to more than 70 employees and perform all aspects of heavy/highway and site construction work.
