Brian Pumford has opened Pearl City Wellness, a new wellness clinic, at 484 Fairmount Ave., Jamestown.

Pumford said Pearl City Wellness is now open and he is excited to start working with people who want to lose weight and improve their overall health. Pearl City Wellness was inspired by Pumford’s interest in overall body health and helping people improve their lives.

“So many people struggle with being overweight and all of the co-occurring health issues,” Pumford said

According to the 2017-18 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Intervention, 74% of Americans are overweight or obese. People who have obesity are at increased risk for many serious diseases and health conditions, including coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, many forms of cancer, mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, and difficulty with physical functioning. Many people struggle on restrictive diets, lose weight, and then end up gaining back everything they lost plus more.

“I want to work with people who are tired of living their lives on restrictive diets and being unhappy with their bodies,” Pumford said. “My goal is to help people tap into their desire to simply live a healthier life with all the benefits it can bring. It’s also very personal as I have had multiple family members who suffered with serious health issues related to unhealthy living habits.”

Pearl City Wellness offers personalized sessions that incorporate mental health wellness strategies, nutrition education focused on a whole food plant based diet, and physical fitness. Pumford said studies have shown mental health, nutrition, and physical fitness all play important roles in maintaining health.

“Most programs involve only one or two of those areas but I wanted to offer a program that includes all three in every session.,” he said.

Pumford has worked in the mental health field for 15 years and has worked as a group and individual fitness instructor for 10 years. He is certified in plant-based nutrition through the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, and is an American Council on Exercise (ACE) certified personal trainer.

“I’m excited to bring all three disciplines together into one program. Every session will be personalized to fit each person’s need. We will also be working out during sessions and learning how to improve fitness at home.”
